A 7-day family itinerary for Austria
A ready-made week in Austria with kids: Vienna, Salzburg and the Lake District, with a family-friendly pace, recommended attractions and planning tips.
Austria is one of the most family-friendly destinations for travelers from Israel: short distances, safe and easy cities, stunning nature, and attractions that suit adults and kids alike. A week is exactly the right amount of time to sample the best without rushing.
Below is a suggested seven-day itinerary built around three anchors: Vienna, Salzburg and the Lake District (Salzkammergut).
Days 1 to 2: Vienna
The capital combines palaces, gardens and interactive museums. At Schönbrunn Palace, entry to the gardens is free, and the zoo inside it (the Tiergarten) is one of the oldest in Europe and a particular favorite with kids. Save the afternoon for the Prater, the amusement park with the historic giant Ferris wheel. And if the kids are already tired of museums, the Hundertwasser House is a colorful, surprising and short stop that fits those moments perfectly.
Tip: buy a day transport pass. Vienna's subway is clean, punctual and easy with a stroller.
Day 3: on to Salzburg
The train ride from Vienna to Salzburg takes about 2.5 hours and is very easy with kids. It's best to reserve seats in advance.
Days 4 to 5: Salzburg
Mozart's birthplace, compact and beautiful. You ride the funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress for a superb view, and in the Mirabell Gardens, known from The Sound of Music, you can wander for free among well-kept flower beds. It's also worth taking the kids to the salt mines in nearby Hallein: an underground experience with wooden slides, loved from as young as 4.
Days 6 to 7: the Lake District
Half an hour to an hour from Salzburg lies one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. The village of Hallstatt is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, and it's worth getting there early in the morning, before the crowds. Nearby Lake Wolfgang (the Wolfgangsee) offers easy boat rides, shallow beaches and a historic mountain railway (the Schafbergbahn) that will delight any child.
Roughly what does it cost?
It depends on the season and the type of lodging, but a reasonable range for a family of four for a week (without flights) is NIS 6,000 to 12,000 (Israeli shekels). The Lake District is cheaper than the cities.
