A first trip abroad with a baby: a guide for parents

Everything to know before a first flight with a baby: easy destinations, packing, the flight, sleep, and planning a pace that won't break anyone.

A first trip with a baby stresses a lot of parents, but with the right planning it's entirely doable, and sometimes even easier than expected (babies are portable and sleep a lot). Here's what matters.

Choose an easy destination

On a first trip with a baby, less is more. A short flight of up to 4 hours is less of a challenge, and a small time difference keeps sleep from being wrecked. Most important is choosing a destination with good infrastructure: a developed place with clinics, supermarkets and stroller-friendly sidewalks, like Greece, Cyprus and Europe's cities.

Pace is everything

A baby sets the pace, so plan one main activity a day, around the baby's nap times. Don't try to squeeze every last drop out of the day; it's a sure recipe for tears, everyone's.

Packing: the critical things

  • Documents: a passport for the baby and travel insurance that covers them.
  • A light folding stroller, and a carrier for places the stroller can't reach.
  • Basic baby medicines and a thermometer.
  • Enough diapers for the first days, until you find a supermarket.
  • Bottles, or formula if needed: don't count on finding your brand abroad.

The flight itself

During takeoff and landing, let the baby nurse or suck on a pacifier; it eases the pressure in the ears. If your baby qualifies by weight, book an airline bassinet in advance, and if possible, time the flight around the baby's sleep.

Lodging

An apartment with a kitchenette is far better than a hotel room: you can warm food, do laundry and put the baby down in peace while you're still awake.

And when the baby grows a little, the rules change. The family trip abroad guide goes through what suits each age, and which destinations open up from about age four.

An itinerary built around the baby

The secret is a relaxed itinerary built around the baby's pace, not against it. Diretix builds you a balanced schedule at a pace that fits, including lodging recommendations and a budget, so the first trip is an experience rather than a test of survival. One trip a month is built in full, for free, up to 12 days.
