A family trip to Prague and the Czech Republic
Prague with kids: an enchanting city at a good price. An itinerary, attractions for every age, and tips for adding day trips outside the city.
Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and it's also family-friendly and significantly cheaper than Western Europe. The center is compact and easy to get around on foot, and there's always another charming corner around the next one. Here's how to plan a successful family trip.
Why Prague suits families
Prices are good on every front (food, lodging and attractions), the city is safe, and the historic center is small enough to see a lot without long journeys. Even the tram is an experience in itself for the kids.
A suggested 4 to 5-day itinerary
- Day 1: the Old Town. Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock and Charles Bridge.
- Day 2: the castle and Petřín Hill. Prague Castle, and an observation tower reached by funicular.
- Day 3: parks and the river. A short cruise on the Vltava and a picnic in Letná Park.
- Days 4 to 5: attractions and day trips (see below).
Attractions kids love
Among the places kids get excited about: the Lego museum, Prague Zoo (one of the best in Europe), the water museum and the Petřín observation tower. And the trams themselves, which fascinate them almost as much as any attraction.
Day trips outside the city
If you have a free day, it's worth leaving the city. Kutná Hora, an old town with a famous church, suits older kids better. Karlovy Vary, an elegant spa town, is about two hours away and makes for a calmer day.
Food and budget
Prague is relatively cheap: a good family meal, central lodging and public transport all cost less here than in Western Europe. It's an excellent destination for families who want a lot of experience on a sane budget.
Prague is an excellent first destination for kids from age six, and if you're still at the stage of deciding whether to go at all, all the decisions of a family trip abroad are laid out in one place.
