A romantic getaway in Rhodes: the right hotel, and where to choose it
A couples' holiday in Rhodes: how to choose a romantic hotel, and why the island's west side, with its sunsets and luxury hotel strip, is the best choice.
Rhodes is known mainly as a family destination, but it has another side, much quieter and more refined, and it's ideal for couples: a walled old town that looks like a film set, red sunsets over the Aegean, white villages on cliffs, and a strip of luxury hotels with infinity pools and spas. If you're planning a couples' holiday, here's how to choose the right hotel and, above all, which part of the island to sleep in.
Why Rhodes works so well for a couples' holiday
Rhodes combines three things that are hard to find together. First, history: the old town from the Crusader period is a World Heritage Site. Second, Mediterranean nature: beaches, coves and sunsets. And third, well-developed tourist infrastructure with high-end hotels. Add a short flight, pleasant weather most of the year and a calmer atmosphere than Greece's "noisy" islands, and you have exactly the recipe for a couples' holiday: enough to do, without the pressure.
Where to stay: the west side of the island
This is the most important decision of the trip, and our recommendation is clear: the west side of Rhodes, especially the Ixia and Ialysos areas, right next to Rhodes town.
Why the west? First, the sunsets: the west coast faces the Aegean, so the sun sets straight into the sea in front of the hotel, and a sunset with a glass of wine on the balcony is a couples' experience you can't get on the east side. Also, Ixia is Rhodes' "hotel strip": most of the 5-star hotels, the adults-only resorts and the spa complexes are concentrated here. And all of it is just a 10 to 15-minute drive from the old town, so it's easy to fit in a romantic evening in its alleys.
In all honesty: the west side is more exposed to the wind, and its beaches are mostly pebbles, not sand. If the main point of the holiday is lying on a sandy beach and swimming in calm water, consider the east side. But if you're after views, sunsets and a pampering hotel, the west wins.
West vs. east: how to choose
The west side (Ixia, Ialysos) is the romantic choice: sunsets, luxury hotels and proximity to the town, though with wind off the sea and pebble beaches. The east side (Kallithea, Faliraki, Lindos) offers sandy beaches and calmer water, sheltered from the wind and excellent for swimming, but it's farther from the town and has less of a sunset.
A nice compromise for couples: a base in the west for most nights, and a day or two in Lindos in the southeast (see below) for a change of scene.
What a romantic hotel in Rhodes looks like
When you search for the hotel, a few things deserve attention. A room or suite with a sea view, ideally with a private balcony for the sunset, makes the difference. Adults-only hotels keep the atmosphere quiet and calm, and an infinity pool facing west toward the sunset is a real bonus. It's also worth looking for a spa with couples' treatments (massage, jacuzzi, hammam) and an on-site chef's restaurant, so you don't have to go out every evening and can enjoy a romantic dinner by the sea.
Tip: don't look only at the stars. Read reviews that emphasize "quiet," "service" and "view," not just "facilities." For couples, the atmosphere matters more than the size of the pool.
Couples' experiences not to miss
- The old town at night: cobbled alleys, the Street of the Knights and small candlelit restaurants, especially magical after dark.
- Lindos village: a white village on a cliff with an ancient acropolis at the top and a stunning view over the bay. Come toward evening.
- Sunset at Ixia: simply sit on the beach or the hotel balcony with a drink at golden hour.
- Prasonisi: the island's southern tip, where two seas meet. Dramatic and wild.
- The Valley of the Butterflies: a green, quiet nature reserve on the west side, lovely for an easy walk together.
- The Emery winery in Embonas: local wine tastings in the island's mountains, a romantic escape from the beach.
When to go
For a couples' holiday, the most beautiful seasons are May to June and September to October: pleasant weather, a warm sea, fewer crowds and saner prices than at the height of summer. July and August are hot and crowded: great for the beach, less so for the quiet atmosphere couples look for.
