Greece with kids: islands, beaches and an itinerary
Greece with kids: which islands suit families best, how many days in each place, and tips on beaches, food and weather.
Greece is one of the easiest destinations for Israeli families: a short flight, a warm and shallow sea, food kids love and warm people who welcome children. The main question isn't whether to go, but which island.
Which islands suit families best
Rhodes is perhaps the most convenient island for families, with excellent infrastructure, shallow beaches and a fascinating old town. Crete is bigger and more varied (beaches, archaeological sites and nature) and suits a longer stay. If you're looking for calm, you'll find it on green Corfu, with beautiful views and fewer parties, while Naxos and Paros are beautiful and authentic and offer excellent family beaches.
Islands like Mykonos and Santorini are beautiful but less suited to young kids: lots of stairs, fewer shallow beaches, and higher prices.
How many days?
For one island with kids, 5 to 7 nights is ideal: enough to settle in, enjoy the beach and take 2 or 3 trips without rushing. It's better not to spread the trip over too many islands, because moving between islands with kids is tiring.
Tips for families in Greece
A few things worth remembering. July and August are very hot, so May to June and September are more pleasant for kids. When choosing a beach, look for one sheltered from the wind; there are apps that show exactly where. Food is no worry: the tavernas serve simple dishes kids love, like pasta, chicken and pita. And if you want the flexibility to reach the quieter beaches too, renting a car on the island makes the difference.
Greece is often a family's first trip abroad, and if that's your situation, how to build a family trip abroad from scratch sorts out the rest of the decisions, from the trip's length to the budget.
