Croatia with kids: beaches, waterfalls and an itinerary

Croatia with kids: clean beaches, the Plitvice waterfalls and old towns. A good-value Mediterranean destination with a ready-made itinerary.

Croatia has become one of the hottest destinations for Israeli families, and rightly so: exceptionally clean beaches, clear water, walled old towns and stunning nature parks, all at a comfortable Mediterranean price. Here's an itinerary that combines beach and nature.

Why Croatia suits families

The flight is relatively short, the weather is pleasant, prices are reasonable and the beaches are safe for kids. It's easy to combine relaxed beach days with nature trips and historic towns here without feeling crammed.

A suggested itinerary: beach and nature

  • Days 1 to 3: Istria (Rovinj and Pula). Pretty seaside towns, a Roman amphitheater in Pula and pleasant beaches.
  • Day 4: Plitvice Lakes National Park. A reserve of waterfalls and turquoise lakes, among the most beautiful in Europe.
  • Days 5 to 7: Dalmatia (Zadar and Šibenik). Old towns, famous sunsets and nearby islands to sail to.

Plitvice with kids

The trails are well marked and include wooden boardwalks over the water. With young kids, choose the shorter route, set out early to beat the heat and the crowds, and don't forget water and comfortable shoes.

Beaches for kids

Good to know in advance: Croatia's beaches are mostly pebbles, not sand, so water shoes are a must. In return you get shallow, clear water, ideal for easy snorkeling and safe play.

Budget and flights

In season there are direct flights, and prices on the ground are reasonable compared with Western Europe. August is the busiest and most expensive month, while June and September are pleasant and cheaper.

Before deciding how many days and what budget, it's worth going through the big decisions of a family trip abroad, because Croatia varies a lot depending on what you choose there.
