Planning a family trip: a step-by-step guide

How to plan a successful family trip without getting lost in it: from choosing a destination to a daily schedule, a simple seven-step method.

Planning a family trip can feel like a huge project: dozens of open tabs, contradictory blogs and a spreadsheet that keeps growing. Here's a simple method that breaks it into seven steps.

Step 1: define the destination and who's going

First of all: who's traveling, and what suits them. A trip with a toddler is fundamentally different from a trip with teenagers. Choose a destination that fits the ages, the season and the budget.

Step 2: decide how many days, and where

Split the days between a few bases instead of moving every day. A simple rule of thumb: no fewer than two nights in each place, so you don't waste days on packing and travel.

Step 3: gather candidate attractions

For each area, list 4 to 6 possible attractions. Don't lock anything in yet; this is just an inventory.

Step 4: filter by pace

This is the most common mistake: cramming too much into a day. A family with kids comfortably manages 2 to 3 activities a day, and fewer, better ones are preferable.

Step 5: build a daily schedule

Now put it together day by day: what in the morning, where you eat, what in the afternoon. Take distances into account, and put attractions that are close to each other on the same day.

Step 6: add lodging and budget

For each base, find suitable lodging and work out an estimated daily budget. That way you know in advance whether the itinerary is realistic.

Step 7: leave room for flexibility

Don't fill every hour. One open day, or even a free morning, saves trips when the weather changes or everyone is tired.

This method starts once you already have a destination and dates. If you're not there yet, a family trip abroad: what to decide, and in what order is the page that comes before this one.

And when there's no time for all this

All these steps take many hours when you do them by hand, one after another. Diretix goes through them for you: you say where and when, and the system builds a full daily schedule, with attractions, a route, hotels and a budget, matched to your ages and pace, in minutes. One trip a month is built in full, for free, up to 12 days.
